ProstaMetric

Home   |   ProstaMetric

MedicaMetrix, Inc. produces urological medical devices with demonstrated “comparative effectiveness” to reduce the cost of healthcare while improving clinical outcomes. Its first product, the ProstaMetric System, is designed to measure prostate volume which is clinically important in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate disease.

ProstaMetric provides a quantitative, office-based measurement of prostate volume at a fraction of the cost of trans-rectal ultra-sound (TRUS) and MRI.

The ProstaMetric System measures the Prostate and calculates prostate volume. Use of prostate cancer risk algorithms (Risk Calculators) which use prostate volume as an important risk factor allow a physician to determine which patients are at high risk for aggressive cancer and thus appropriate for Prostate Biopsy and which should be recommended for active surveillance, sometimes called watchful waiting. Potentially this will reduce unnecessary prostate biopsies by more than 50% with a net savings in prostate cancer diagnosis (after ProstaMetric sales) of more than $1B. It will also allow treatment to be focused on aggressive cancers with additional savings of $1.5 billion in avoided over-treatment of indolent cancers.

The ProstaMetric System

The ProstaMetric System enables a physician to measure the palpable surface of the prostate through the rectal wall using a physical measurement methodology. This measure is then used to determine prostate volume. The ProstaMetric System has two major components (below):

i) a hardware Controller with electronics and firmware to decode and interpret the signals from the fingertip optical encoder, and;

ii) a single use, disposable fingertip optical encoder which goes over the physician’s forefinger and plugs into the Controller. It has roller ball with a calibrated grid and optical fibers that enables the measurement of the width of the palpable surface from which prostate volume can be calculated.
